Our Story
As a teenager living in a post-war Greece of 1957, Jim Iliopoulos was desperate to escape the disparity caused by famines that ravaged the country. So, with the support of his family, he travelled alone to Canada on a 14 day voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, carrying with him only the clothes on his back, the well wishes of loved ones and a command enough of the English language to say “I like a job, any job please!”.
Never did he dream that by taking such a life defining risk to leave home, he would work 18 hour days, feeding his hunger for knowledge and new opportunities. From the fruits of his labour in his new country he would come to launch a specialty pizzeria as a flagship restaurant during the opening of a future destination hotspot of Winnipeg, The Forks Market.
Almost 31 years later, following in her father’s footsteps, Penny Iliopoulos-Yakubowski provides friends, family and distant travellers alike the experience of high quality greek and italian cuisine that Zorba’s name has come to represent. Taking pride in her father’s efforts to establish such a restaurant, she continues to uphold the values he instilled in her by preparing all of Zorba’s recipes from scratch with the best natural ingredients, ensures every customer a delicious and healthy alternative to the commercially processed food of today’s culture.
While carrying on the tradition of her father in the everyday activities of Zorba’s restaurant, Penny hopes that with every meal someone walks away with more than just a satisfied appetite, but with the understanding that with true conviction and overwhelming passion, anything is possible!
